Baked Sage and Onion Bannock

Traditional Aboriginal bread that can be cooked in a variety of ways, but the BBQ is my favorite.

    1. Indoor Preparation: Preheat barbeque to 400 degree F. In a bowl, mix all ingredients except shortening and water. Cut shortening into mixture and add water until blended. Place on a floured table and roll out to 1/2 inch thickness, cut into 3 inch circles and place on a lightly greased baking sheet. For larger buns and rolls, divide dough into two pieces (and bake for a longer period).
    2. Outdoor Preparation: Place a large sheet of foil, shiny side down on the cooking grid and place baking sheet on top. Brush bannock lightly with oil and bake in a pre-heated 400 degree F barbeque for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown, with the lid CLOSED to create a convection cooking environment. Serve with butter and enjoy.
